As geese and migratory birds begin to return to the community, the Township of Uxbridge reminds residents of general precautions ahead of a possible upcoming avian flu season. At this time, there have been no confirmed cases of avian influenza (H5N1), also known as bird flu, in the community, in 2025.
Although there is no cause for concern, the Township encourages residents to be proactive and follow basic precautions to help prevent the potential spread of avian flu as the season progresses.
The Government of Canada recommends the following simple steps to reduce the risk of spreading avian flu among wild birds:
- Keep a distance from wild birds and other wild animals, and don't touch, feed, or handle them
- Always wash your hands after being in an area where birds and other wildlife are living or nesting, such as in parks or zoos
- Children should be monitored to ensure proper handwashing
- Pets should be kept away from birds and wildlife and their feces
If you encounter a distressed, ill, or deceased bird, particularly geese, please report it to Uxbridge-Scugog Animal Control at animal-shelter@uxsc.ca or 905-985-9547 or report the case to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative at https://www.cwhc-rcsf.ca/avian_influenza.php.
The Township encourages residents to stay informed and prepared; however, there is no cause for concern at this time. These measures are intended as a precautionary reminder to help prevent the spread of avian flu, should the situation evolve.
